HISTORY

In the early 1970's, an eclectic boutique opened in the old Victorian home located at the front of our present location. The owner called her boutique "The Elephant's Trunk Too." The orginal Elephant's Trunk name came from a shop located in Mt. Kisco, New York. The original logo designed for the boutique contained an elephant with a chest full of gems strapped on its back.

When the boutique closed in 1976, the logo was transferred to the Flea Market. When you think about it, it is appropriate, since there are treasures and gems to be discovered here every week! Thus was created The Elephant's Trunk Country Flea Market with the logo we continue to use.

The Elephant's Trunk Country Flea Market began in 1976. The first markets found aisles named after New York City streets or alley-ways. The market was held on Sundays, and in 1976, the presence of fifteen vendors was a "big" day!

The market in those early years found dealers set up on the lawn in front of the house. The public would park in the present parking lot and walk to the dealers who were were on the lawn, in the side parking lot, and filling in the current Field A.

In the early days of the market, Fields C and D were used to grow alfalfa, as was most of the parking lot. A local farmer would come in two or three times a year to cut and bale the hay. As the flea market grew, the fields were cut more regulary and consistent and uniform dealer spaces were created.

As more dealers came in, more fields were added to create our current field design. This didn't happen overnight, and it has evolved gradually over a period of many years.
